MATT LIVELY: MODERN-DAY SURREALIST Matt Lively is a nationally recognized artist from Virginia who exhibits his surreal paintings at ADAM CAVE FINE ART in Raleigh, North Carolina. Lively has been a full-time artist since graduating from VCU with a BFA in 1992. Lively has developed a very personal style of oil painting on canvas and paper that incorporates a great deal of underpainting and impasto techniques. What is most distinctive is Matt Lively's subject matter. The artist has created a personal language of quirky, whimsical and unque images, that repeatedly appear in his work, and which transport the viewer into a familiar but strange visual universe. THE MATT LIVELY UNIVERSE Many of the scenes in a Matt Lively painting feel like theatrical stage sets where the actors are all chairs, tables, pianos, telephones and fans. Every object sits at an odd angle suggesting life and movement. Although Lively does not paint people in these scenes, empty dresses and shoes act as stand-ins. Strangest of all is the occasional appearance of “beecylces”; little bees on unicycles flying through the air. The overall effect is both quiet and active at the same time and there is always a sense that something is about to happen.
